Congress has passed a trillion-dollar stimulus package in response to the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The package includes many protections for homeowners, including an automatic right of forbearance for any homeowner that has a federally-backed mortgage loan, typically from Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae.
You can check online quickly to see whether you have such a loan.
If so, you need only notify your servicer (the company that sends you your monthly statement), and request up to 180 days forbearance, during which time you will not need to make any payments. A second 180-day forbearance may be available as well.
This unpaid amounts will be due at some point, however, although your bank will be required to provide you an option to repay, whether via a modification or balloon payment or extension at the end of your loan.
